Matoya

Matoya is a highly accomplished musician with expertise in multiple instruments and genres. Her passion for music began in her childhood; she started playing the violin at a young age and later expanded her repertoire to include the electric bass, piano, guitar and jazz studies. After completing a BA in violin performance at Texas Tech University and a stint in professional symphony orchestras, she transitioned into non-classical work, fusing jazz improvisation, R&B, and soul music into her repertoire and compositions. Departing from traditional sonata forms, her works follow the structure of American songwriting. Demus’s creative practice embodies a commitment to exploring new musical horizons while honoring the rich traditions of Black American music.
